Coming from a brand born and bred on the ideals of big wheeled mountain bikes, the Niner BSB 9 RDO has a savage soul with a refined finish perfect for a rowdy day of cyclocross.

When the leaves turn and the weather cools, our thoughts turn to cyclocross—the fastest-growing segment of bicycle racing. This fall it was time for a new race bike for McKenzie Melcher, one of our sponsored riders. Niner’s carbon ‘cross machine had been rumored for some time, but only recently became reality, and we knew it was the right bike to build up for McKenzie’s 2014/15 race campaign.

Enter the BSB 9 RDO

Niner’s new BSB (Blood, Sweat, and Beers) was released just in the nick of time for the fall 2014 cyclocross season. The spectacle that is Cross Vegas served as its public debut, and now it’s ready to get dirty on your local race circuit. BSB features a modern, disc-only design, full carbon construction, and cyclocross-friendly cable routing. There are no cable guides inside the front triangle for easy carrying, and the frame is ready for Di2 electronic cable routing if desired. A bare frame weighs in at less than 1,000 grams—every gram counts when you’re breathless and covered in mud.

Unique Fit Requirements

McKenzie’s short stature prompted us to carefully consider rider fit when selecting her new race bike. Fortunately, Niner is producing the new BSB 9 RDO in a wide range, from 47cm (pictured) all the way up to 62cm. Kudos to Niner for breaking the mold and offering such a diversity of sizes. A 47cm allows McKenzie a comfortalbe standover height that she wouldn’t get from other brands, and a 510mm effective top tube ensures the perfect amount of reach.

We kitted this one out with SRAM’s new “performance at an incredible value” Rival 22 11-speed group, complete with hydraulic disc brakes. It’s rounded out with Niner’s new CX-specific wheelset, Schwalbe rubber, and Niner’s proven cockpit components. The complete bike weighs in at a cool 18 pounds for training, and would easily dip into the 16 pound range when fitted with the kind of carbon wheels and tubulars favored by elite ‘crossers for race day use.
